Make 'Em Pay

Make 'Em Pay was cut over a series of sessions at the Williams house, written mostly by Jake although Oliver contributed the post-script/outro/cautionary warning. The song is a brutally frank admission of Jake's philandering ways, with customarily paranoid finger-wagging at the end from Oliver.

lyrics

When all is said and done, I'm happy I'm leaving
When everything is said, there's no more to be done
I'll see you soon I think, although I'll be different
And no one will find out the bad things I've done

I stumbled in a field between darkness and light
I stopped a while to think, yeah I slept through the night!
But then when I awoke I traveled a distance
And I was invincible, or so I thought!
I looked around to see a town where I lived before
Down inside the earth, there came a roar!
The people ran in fear, their lives were in question
And I was offended since I can't be hurt

But who am I to think that a man's dying wishes mean
A thing to those who made it that way?
Well I'm pretty sure that I'll find a weapon
And I'll make 'em pay!

I crept among the crowd that gathered around me
As I began to faint, they pointed to the sky
From up among the clouds, an angel was crashing down
I turned my head away cause I didn't care
I found another path and I stumbled along it
I searched among the grass for that broken angel's crown
Days and days went by and I felt I had missed it
The point of my story is that I am alone!

But who am I to think that a man's dying wishes mean
A thing to those who made it that way?
Well I'm pretty sure that I'll find a weapon
And I'll make 'em pay!

No time to waste now
You have to make haste now
And it's all beyond your control
Don't ask God to save you
Cause Jesus forgave you
But he didn't answer your call
